Betty Mabel (Shepard) Bryer, longtime resident of South Main Street in St.
Johnsbury, passed away in Massachusetts on Saturday, Dec. 31,
2011, at the age of 84. She was born in St. Johnsbury on Sept.
17, 1927, the daughter of Robert Donald Shepard and Mamie Ethel (Wright)
Shepard, later known as Mamie MacDonald. Betty graduated from St.
Johnsbury Academy in 1945 and always looked forward to her reunion year. She
married Leon W. Bryer in 1946. Leon, her husband of 61 years, passed away Nov. 17, 2007.
Betty was an integral part of Bryer's Plumbing and Heating. The
Bryer family spent many happy summers at their camp on
Harvey's Lake in West Barnet. She was a member of the North
Congregational Church and was active in church affairs. She
enjoyed doing puzzles, oil painting and knitting, and was known
for her gingermen cookies. She was active in the Order of Eastern
Star and volunteered at the St. J. tourist information booth.
Survivors include her daughter, Diane S. van Buren and her
husband, Martin, of Chelmsford, Mass.; her son, Dennis P. Bryer
and his wife, Donna, of Plainfield, Vt.; her granddaughter, Jennifer
van Buren-Myers and her husband, Benjamin Myers, of
Tyngsborough, Mass.; and her grandson, Martin L. van Buren and
his wife, Jamie, of Bellingham, Mass. Betty was predeceased by
her brother, Robert Shepard, of Irasburg, Vt.
Memorial services will be held in St. Johnsbury on Thursday, Jan.
12, at 1 p.m. at the North Congregational Church on Main Street.
The pastor, the Rev. Jay Sprout, will officiate. She will be buried
at a later date at the Danville Green Cemetery.
