Tony Handy of St. Johnsbury passed away at the VA Hospital in White River
Jct. on Monday, Dec. 31, 2012 at the age of 88.
He was born in Newport on Jan. 20, 1924, the second-to-youngest of eleven
children born to Gabriel Solomon and Anna (Goleb) Handy. He graduated from
St. Johnsbury Academy with the class of 1943 and went on to serve in the US
Navy during WWII, serving as a pharmacist mate. He participated in the invasion of Normandy.
Tony worked in the family ice business as a young man. He went
on to work at Swifts, Ralston Purina for 21 years, later retiring
from St. J Academy and Aja Catering. After retiring he drove cars
for Abel Toll and was a volunteer driver for cancer patients at DHMC.
Tony was a parishioner at St. John the Evangelist Church and
loved spending time at the church and in the Adoration Chapel.
He served as both a liturgical and Eucharistic minister and was a
daily Mass server and funeral server over the years. He fondly
remembered his time spent at the Notre Dame Church.
Tony was one of the first Notre Dame Credit Union members and
had served as an officer. He belonged to the VFW and American
Legion in St. Johnsbury and was a fourth degree knight at Sheridan Council.
He especially enjoyed Notre Dame football, camping, and fishing.
He is survived by his wife Dianne (Carpenter) Handy; four
children and eleven grandchildren: Solomon Handy, his wife
Kimberly and their children Danielle and Alexis of Escondido
Calif.; Elisa Maurice, her husband Rodney and their children
Peter, Anthony, Jonathan and Phillip of Barre, Vt.; Jennifer
Bassett, her husband Jack and their children Nathan and Lauren
of St. Johnsbury; Samuel Handy, his wife Megan and their
children Samuel Mark, Madelyn and Isabelle of Escondido.
Pauline Handy of St. Johnsbury is his only surviving sister or
brother-in-law and now lives in South Burlington. All his nieces
and nephews were very close to their Uncle Tony as were
Dianne's extended Carpenter family. Tony also is survived by his
cousins and had, at last count, 33 godchildren.
He was predeceased by his brothers Richard, Sam, Netcy,
Solomon, and the two Phillips; and his sisters Nellie Azur, Rose
Handy, Mary Handy and Hilda Grenier.
Visiting hours will be held this Friday, Jan. 4 from 5-8 p.m. at the Sayles Funeral Home.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Johnsbury this Saturday,
Jan. 5 at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church.
He will be buried at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in the spring.
Tony loved his church. It would be appropriate to make memorial
