Andrew R. Cowens , formerly of St. Johnsbury, Vt., passed away at the
Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin, Vt., on Friday, June 15, 2007 at the
age of 83. He was born in St. Johnsbury on Sept. 15, 1923, the son of
Andrew B. and Exilia (Sevigny) Cowens. He married Betty Gervais on Sept.
24, 1945. He and Betty raised their family on North Avenue in St.
Johnsbury. Andy served in the Navy during World War II and was a
member of the American Legion. He was a retired letter carrier at the St.
Johnsbury Post Office. Following retirement, the Cowenses moved to Lake
Wales, Fla., where he and Betty lived for 26 years. They returned to
Vermont a year ago and made their home in Montpelier. Andy enjoyed
coaching basketball at Catholic Central School and at the St. Johnsbury
Rotary basketball program. He was also a basketball official and tennis
buff. He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Montpelier (191 Barre St. 05602);
four children: Nancy Comey of Stowe; Marty Cowens and his wife,
Charlene, of Littleton, N.H.; Dave Cowens and his wife, Vicki, of Monroe,
N.H.; Nathan ?Putt? Cowens and his wife, Kathy, of Middlesex, Vt.; seven
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Eric Lumbra, his wife, Erica,
and their two children, Lucas and Tucker; Megan and Amy Cowens; Jamie
and Alison Cowens; Kylie and Kristen Cowens. A funeral Mass will be
celebrated in St. Johnsbury on Tuesday, June 19, at 4 p.m. at St. John the
Evangelist Church. The family will receive friends at the Sayles Funeral
Home Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions could be
