REED: J. Ronald , 81, of St. Johnsbury, died at his home at 331 Summer St., Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001. He was born in St. Johnsbury Aug. 4, 1920, the son of Fabian and Glenn (Adams) Reed. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving stateside in the pilot training program and air force medical detachment. He married Virginia Erikson Sept. 4, 1948; she predeceased him Nov. 14, 1991. Mr. Reed was longtime vice president and insurance agent at Reed Insurance Agency on Main Street in St. Johnsbury, his father Fabian having been president and his brother Russell, treasurer. Ron's passion in life was his trumpet and his more than 50-year affiliation with the Mt. Sinai Shriner's Band. He had been a member of the St. Johnsbury Town Band since 1937. While attending the University of Alabama, he was proud to have played with their Million Dollar Band. The Reeds spent summers at their Lake Groton camp. Time spent with his family was always most important to Ron. He also enjoyed a good game of bridge or cribbage. Civically he was a member of the St. Johnsbury Rotary Club, the Elks Club, Walden Club, Passumpsic Lodge 27, and Mt. Sinai Temple 3 Shrine. He also served as chairman of the Caledonia-Southern Essex Red Cross blood program for about 20 years. He was a former trustee of the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum and former executive committeeman for the Chamber of Commerce. Ron was very active in North Congregational Church, where he served as church clerk and as deacon for three years, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and was Sunday School superintendent. He is survived by his second wife, Dot Reed, a longtime friend whom he married Jan. 11, 1997; two daughters, Elaine Magnan and husband John of St. Albans, and Martha Reed of St. Johnsbury; three grandchildren, Scott, Angela and Tyler; his brother, Russell Reed and wife Virginia of St. Johnsbury; nieces and nephews; and Dot's three sons, David, Donald and Alan Trevarthen. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the North Congregational Church on Main Street in St. Johnsbury. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at the Sayles Funeral Home Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., where a Masonic service is being planned for 7:45 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to Mt.
