Raymond Douglas , age 91, of Lyndonville, passed away very
peacefully Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at The Pines assisted living
facility. He was born in St. Johnsbury on May 23, 1918, the son of
Victor and Catherine (Radford) Douglas. He graduated from St.
Johnsbury Academy with the Class of 1936. After marrying
Virginia Porter of West Burke on Jan. 22, 1942, he served in the
U.S. Army in the Southeast Pacific during World War II. Virginia
predeceased him on Valentine's Day, 1995. Ray loved people. He
followed local sports very closely; it seemed he had his own
parking space near the LI alumni office overlooking the football
field. He knew every back road there was in the Kingdom. He had
a love for the outdoors, whether hunting, gardening or simply
sitting in his lawn chair in front of his garage looking down the
valley. Ray worked at Tap & Die for over 30 years; he valued an
education and worked hard to send both his boys to the University
of Vermont. Along the way he also worked at a bakery, a general
store, the East Haven radar base, and Danville High School; he
took pride that he never missed a paycheck. He is survived by
two sons, James R. Douglas and Ms. DJ Shaw of Spring Hill,
Tenn., and Steven F. Douglas and wife Susan of Longmeadow,
Mass.; three grandchildren, Jennifer Feliz, Tracey Manwaring and
Christine Dreidel; seven great-grandchildren; an aunt, Marion
Radford of St. Johnsbury; three sisters, Kay Warrell and husband
Ralph of St. Johnsbury, Marion Parsons of Dover, N.H., and
Madeline Easter of St. Johnsbury; a sister-in-law, Pat Douglas of
St. Johnsbury; brother-in-law Robert Porter and wife Rita of
Townsend, Mass.; nieces and nephews; close friends and
neighbors. Besides his wife, Virginia, he was predeceased by his
two brothers, Fred and Robert Douglas. Public graveside services
will be held Saturday, May 22 at 11 a.m. at Hillside Cemetery in
West Burke with Mr. John Sleeper officiating. Visiting hours will be
held at Guibord Funeral Home, Wednesday evening, Jan. 13,
from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions, marked for the "Resident
Activities Fund," may be sent to The Pines Rehabilitation and
Health Center, 601 Red Village Road, Lyndonville, VT 05851. His
family wishes to convey their sincere appreciation for the loving
care their Dad received during his stay at The Pines assisted living facility.
