MARJORIE (SHERRER) O'NEIL - ST. JOHNSBURY - Marjorie
"Marge" Lilla O'Neil, 95, of St. Johnsbury, passed away on April 7, 2015,
at Canterbury Inn. Marjorie was born to the late
Harold J. and Julia Sherrer on May 3, 1919, in Lyndonville. At a
young age, she moved to St. Johnsbury where she lived the
rest of her life enjoying and enriching the community around
her. She graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy, where she
developed lasting friendships that remained important to her
throughout her life. First and foremost, Marjorie loved her
family and leaves behind her three daughters, Sue Grayson and
her husband, Don, of Farmington, Conn., Peg Soucy and her
husband, Phil, of Springfield, Va., and Marianne O'Neil of South
Burlington; six grandchildren, Kelly Patton, Corey and Amanda
Gingue, Jenny Hayes, Charlie and Andy Grayson; 11 great-
grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Marjorie had a particularly special connection with her great-
grandson, Logan, who lovingly referred to her as "GG Marge."
Marge was predeceased by her husband, Larry; and siblings,
Dwayne Sherrer, Paul Sherrer, Mary Ellen Wheelock, and
Marilyn Jean Sherrer. Marge had a wonderful sense of humor,
surpassed only by her sense of style and strength. She loved to
dance, and it was at a dance, shortly after graduating from high
school, where she met her loving husband of 60 years, Larry.
She will be remembered for the joy she found in opening her
home to family and friends for holidays and also for her creative
spirit. She loved to sew, making countless evening dresses,
cheerleader and majorette uniforms for her own daughters as
well as for others. She had a passion for cooking and was
known for her chicken divan, yum-yum cake, and chocolate
chip cookies. She developed a love for quilling and created
beautiful snowflakes that will adorn family and friends'
Christmas trees for years to come. She enjoyed gardening, was
a member of the Seed & Weed Garden Club, and took great
pride in her prize-winning flower arrangements. As an active
member of the Grace United Methodist Church, she taught
Sunday school and participated in and cherished the friendships
made through the BYOBB Bible study. She played an active role
in the Arlington School PTA, was a Girl Scout leader and
president of the American Legion Auxiliary. An avid athlete, she
was nicknamed "Babe Didrickson" in high school for her
prowess on the basketball court. She continued to pursue her
love of sports throughout her life and particularly enjoyed golf
and skiing. With her husband, Larry, and friends in the area,
she established the 13 Ski Club. She loved reading and was a
member of the Great Books Club. In addition to her community
involvement, she also held down a number of jobs including
working as a secretary at the school superintendents office and
the medical records department at NVRH. The family would like
to take this opportunity to thank Brittany Machell, Marge's
longtime personal companion and caregiver; Dr. Timothy
Tanner and his medical staff at Danville Health Center; Wanda
Waugh and the dedicated, caring nurses and staff at Canterbury
Inn; and Caledonia Home Health Care & Hospice. A private
celebration of Marge's life will be held in the spring. In lieu of
flowers, donations can be made to Grace United Methodist
Church, 36 Central St., St. Johnsbury, VT; or Canterbury Inn,
46 Cherry St., St. Johnsbury, VT 05819.
