Loretta (Veilleux) Conly passed away Monday morning, Jan. 17, 2005,
at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center. She was a
longtime resident of 41 Lincoln St. in St. Johnsbury. She is
survived by her husband, Doug (41 Lincoln St. 05819); two sons,
George and his wife Ruth (Porter) Conly of Cape Elizabeth Maine
(31 Manter St. 04107), and Douglas and his wife Patricia
(Houghton) Conly of Lyndonville (3 Skyview Dr. 05851); four
grandchildren, Christopher Conly of Boston Mass., Kara Conly of
South Portland Maine, Melissa Conly of Burlington, and Patrick
Conly of Lyndonville; one surviving sister, Jeannette Veilleux
Sumner of Burlington; and many nieces and nephews. She was
predeceased by three brothers, Frederick Veilleux, Arsene
"Mickey" Veilleux, and Albert Veilleux; and five sisters, Irene
Pollock-Hudson, Fabiola Roy, Angelina Martin, Yvonne Gagne,
and by an infant sister Doris. Loretta's father, George Edgar
Veilleux, came from Ste. Marguerite, Quebec. He later met and
married Cordelia Corriveau in St. Johnsbury and began to raise
their family on Pearl Street here in St. Johnsbury. Loretta was
always proud of her French Canadian background and could be
heard conversing in French to many friends and family. She
attended graded school at Mt. St. Joseph Catholic School for girls
and graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy with the Class of
1936. On Oct. 24, 1942, she married Douglas Conly of St.
Johnsbury at Notre Dame des Victories Church. The Rev.
Armand Fortin married them. They relocated to Brunswick, Maine,
on account of Doug's job at the Navy shipyard. In December of
that year, Doug volunteered to join our armed forces and Loretta
returned to St. Johnsbury to live with her parents. Following
Doug's discharge from the army, the couple purchased their first
home in East St. Johnsbury. In 1953 they moved to Railroad
Street and purchased their current home on Lincoln Street in 1954.
Loretta's first job out of school was with McLellans
department store in St. Johnsbury. Upon her return to St.
Johnsbury, she was employed by St. Johnsbury Trucking as a
payroll clerk. Later in life she was employed at Traynor's Tax
Service, the Henault Press, and the medical practice of Dr. James
Russell. Her faith in God was always an important aspect of her
life. She was a member of Notre Dame parish for many years and
was deeply saddened when it was destroyed by fire. She later
was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church parish and a
member of The Altar Society. Loretta was an avid sewer, knitter,
and for a period of time enjoyed ceramic classes. She also spent
considerable time during the summer months tending to her
flower gardens. During her relaxation time, she could be found in
her favorite chair knitting or watching television with her beloved
cat on her lap. She was also a very active volunteer after
retirement, assisting the Lifeline, Red Cross blood drives, and
numerous church activities. Living with a husband and two sons,
she enjoyed watching sports on television and attended her son's
baseball, basketball and football games. She was a fan of the
Boston Red Sox. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday,
Jan. 20, at 11 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist Church. Burial will
be in May at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held
Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial
contributions may be directed to either St. Johns Altar Society, in
care of St. Johns Church, 49 Winter St., St. Johnsbury VT 05819;
or VT/NH Alzheimer's Association, 10 Ferry St., Suite 427B, Concord VT 03301.
