James P. Cunavelis , of Shrewsbury, died Tuesday, May 4, 2010.
He leaves his wife, Christine (Camougis) Cunavelis; two brothers,
George and John Cunavelis, both of Vermont; nieces and
nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; several cousins. He
was predeceased by his sister, Helen Cunavelis. He was born in
St. Johnsbury, Vt., a son of Peter and Vasiliki (Koumparis)
Cunavelis, and graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy. He
attended the University of Vermont and later graduated from the
University of Missouri with a degree in journalism. James was an
Army Air Corps veteran during World War II, serving in England,
Libya and Italy. He worked for many years at the Hartford Courant
newspaper as a sportswriter and a freelance writer, where he had
the opportunity to write stories on such people as pro golfer Jack
Nicklaus and former President John F. Kennedy. Previously, he
worked for the Telegram and Gazette. James was an active
member of the American Legion Post 204, the VFW Post 6907
both in West Boylston, AHEPA Organization and an avid
volunteer of the American Red Cross. Even though he was not a
graduate of Shrewsbury High School, he was very involved with
the establishment of the Shrewsbury High School Alumni
Association. The funeral service will be held Friday, May 7, at 11
a.m. in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell St.,
Worcester, Mass. A calling hour will be held in the church from 10
to 11 a.m. prior to the funeral. Burial will be on Saturday, May 8,
at 11 a.m. in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, St. Johnsbury, Vt. In lieu
of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Spyridon
Greek Orthodox Cathedral Family Center, 102 Russell Street, Worcester, MA 01609.
