Howard Ralph Hastings Funeral services were held July 3, 2007,
at the Life Way Chapel in Post Falls, Idaho, for Howard Ralph
Hastings, who passed away June 29, 2007. He was born in St.
Johnsbury on June 4, 1921, the only child of Edward and Bertha
(Goodenough) Hastings. He grew up on the family farm in
Waterford and was a 1939 graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy.
He went west to Idaho and Alaska. He worked on the Alaska
Railroad, and then on active duty as a radio officer in the U.S.
Navy during the Vietnam War. Later he was a radio operator for
the merchant marine. In 1970, he married Mafalda Anselmo in
Idaho. Returning to Alaska, he worked for the FAA and the
National Weather Bureau and as a civilian for the Air Force.
Retiring in 1983, he and "Falda" lived on a small farm in the
McGuire District of Post Falls. They raised a few cattle and had
an orchard and large gardens. In later years they spent winters in
Desert Hot Spring, Calif. He is survived by two stepsons and their
families, Tom and Sue Anselmo, and Don and Mary Ann
Annselmo; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and cousins in
Vermont, Florida and California. He was predeceased by his wife,
Mafalda, and his ex-wife Paulina Dauphin.
