RUSSELL: Hazen, 89, of Lyndonville, died peacefully at his home Saturday morning, May 18, 2002. He was born Nov. 8, 1912, in St. Johnsbury, the son of the late Perley R. and Maude N. (Smith) Russell. He was a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1930. In 1935 Hazen married Cornelia J. "Babe" Marlowe. Hazen became a registered pharmacist in 1934. He worked for Parker Drug Store in St. Johnsbury. In 1943 he moved his family to Lyndonville and opened Russell's Drug Store there, which he operated for 36 years until his retirement in 1979. He continued to work as a part-time pharmacist in the area for several more years. Very active in the Lyndonville community, Hazen held many town and village offices over the years, donating over 137 years of community service. He served the Vermont State Board of Pharmacy as its secretary for 10 years. Hazen was a long-time volunteer at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital, a Lyndonville Rotarian, a member of the Lyndonville First Congregational Church, a Mason, a Shriner and a member of the Elks. He was an active outdoorsman who enjoyed participating and following local and national sports. Survivors include one son, Milton Russell of Montpelier; two daughters, Sheila Teske and husband Kenneth of Lyndonville, and Linda Shatney and husband William of Greensboro; eight grandchildren, Susan Teske, Marie Hattabaugh, Kenneth Teske Jr., Stephanie Jackson, Lisa Teske, Jan Lamoureux, Troy Shatney and Trapper Shatney; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; a brother, Raymond Russell and wife Evelyn of Lyndonville; a sister, Jeannette Ripley of St. Johnsbury; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Hussey of North Carolina; and nieces, nephews and many, many friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Babe Russell, in 1992; a brother, Reginald Russell; and two sisters, Dorothy Dawson and Marion Sparrow. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 8 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Donald Vincent officiating. Friends are encouraged to bring written items or stories regarding Hazen for the creation of a family scrap book. In honor of Hazen's wishes, there will be no visiting hours.
