Gordon Gorham Spaulding of St. Johnsbury passed away Sunday evening, Nov. 9, 2014, at the age of 94.
Born on Nov. 8, 1920, in Des Moines, Iowa, the Spaulding family returned to St.
Johnsbury in 1923. His parents were the late Ora and Hazel (Gorham)
Spaulding. He married Marilyn Wright in Orleans on Dec. 6, 1958, and they
settled in St. Johnsbury. Their son Todd was born April 21, 1961.
Gordon graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1938. Following graduation,
he worked briefly for the Forestry Service and was a draftsman for Fairbanks
Morse and Co. In 1942 he enlisted in the Naval Aviation Cadets, spending
several months in flight training. He then served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre
until being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946.
Gordon worked for New England Tel & Tel for 37 years in various phases of the
telephone company. As a youngster Gordon loved playing hockey. His sports
interest later turned to skiing and golf. He maintained his devoted interests in
the New York Yankees, the Boston Celtics, the Boston Bruins and the New
England Patriots. Gordon was a member of the North Congregational Church,
the VFW, American Legion, and a life member of the D.A.V.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn (91 Brightlook Dr., Apt. 16, 05819); his son
Todd of St. Johnsbury; two grandchildren: Michael T. Spaulding and Elise M.
Kent; two great-grandchildren, Elise's children Kaye and Evan. He was recently
predeceased by a brother Thorne Spaulding.
Services will be held at the Sayles Funeral Home this Saturday, Nov. 15, at 1
p.m. The Rev. Jay Sprout, Gordon's former longtime pastor at the North
Congregational Church, will officiate at the service. There will be no visiting hours.
