George W. Kellogg of St. Johnsbury and a proud Vermonter,
passed away on Nov. 7, 2012, at the age of 92.
He was born June 8, 1920, in St. Johnsbury, Vt., and he was only
child born to George and Harriette (Weeks) Kellogg.
He graduated from the St. Johnsbury Academy in 1939, and
attended Adirondack Commercial College in Malone, N.Y. In
1945, he married Marie L. Humphrey in London, England, while
serving in the United States Air Force, 306th Bomb Wing, 327th
squadron in Thurleigh, England. He retired from the Air Force in
1964 while stationed at Pease Air Force Base in Portsmouth,
N.H., and returned to Vermont to bring his family closer to his mother.
Shortly after moving back to St. Johnsbury, George purchased
the yellow octagonal house on Mt. Pleasant Street and remained
there with his family for the rest of his life. As a youth growing up
in St. Johnsbury George always admired that yellow octagonal
house, and it was a joy for him to one day live there.
George went on to work for the State of Vermont as a Right of
Way Agent for the Agency of Transportation. During his
employment he negotiated land transactions between the state
and citizens for the Interstates and major road corridors. After
retirement, he was active on the local town boards. He was a life
member of the VFW, American Legion, 65 years of service to the
Grand Lodge (Masons), and member of the North Congregational
Church. He enjoyed attending the St. Johnsbury Academy
reunions, the 306th Bomb Wing Gatherings, and traveling all over
the country and to England to visit friends and family.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marie (Humphrey) Kellogg
of St. Johnsbury; two daughters, Kerry Labombard and her
husband Steve of Arizona, and Pamela Showalter of South
Carolina; and a son, James Kellogg and his wife Lori of St.
Johnsbury; five grandchildren: Carly Chestnut and her husband
Cory, Amy Whitman and her husband Todd, Sarah Phannerstiel
and her husband Joe, Aren and Caitlin Kellogg; and seven great-
grandchildren: Greyson, Ava, Jacob, John Kellan, Markus, Trenton, Clayton.
A graveside service will be held at Grove Cemetery in East St.
Johnsbury in the spring with full military honors. The date will be
announced in a later edition of this paper.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in
George's memory to the Kingdom Animal Shelter, P.O Box 462,
St. Johnsbury, VT 05819 or a charity of one's choice.
