Esther H. Renfrew , 91, of Northfield, Vt., passed away peacefully, on July 30, surrounded by her children. Esther was born in St. Johnsbury on April 18, 1918, the daughter of Floyd and Agnes Holmes. Esther graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1937. As a young woman she loved to bike, ski, hike and camp. One of her favorite places to go since she was 5 years old was the family summer home on Miles Pond in North Concord, Vt. Esther married Clinton A. Renfrew in St. Johnsbury in 1945. They moved to Northfield in 1950, where Clinton taught at Norwich University and Esther raised four children. Esther was a very active member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church for over 55 years and she belonged to the Northfield Women's Reading Circle. She was very active in the Northfield community, volunteering for cub scouts, girl scouts and the senior center. She had many passions including her art work, cooking, photography and gardening. She is survived by her four children, their families and many good friends. Her children and families are: Roger and Marilyn Renfrew from Skowhegan, Maine, and their two children, Megan and Ira; Elizabeth Renfrew Clarkson and Wayne Clarkson from Wells, Maine, and their two children, Christopher and Rebecca; Bruce and Sharon Renfrew of Pittsfield, Mass., and their two children, Gregory and Julie; Virginia Renfrew and her partner, Gail Zatz of Montpelier, and their two children, Daniel and Aaron; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, Clinton and her sister, Ruth Holmes. The family wishes to thank all of the staff at Mayo Manor and Mayo Healthcare for the wonderful care, support and friendship that Esther and her children received. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 8, at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Church in Northfield. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends may call at Kingston Funeral Home, 35 Slate Avenue, in Northfield on Friday, Aug. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 203 South Main Street, Northfield, VT 05663.
