On Oct. 8, 2010, Eleanor R. (Drown) White , 92, passed away
peacefully at the Blaire House Nursing Home in Tewksbury,
Mass., in the presence of her children, Jack and Sharon. Eleanor
was the Blaire House's longest resident (2001-2010), and was
affectionately known to the staff as "Ellie." Eleanor was the
youngest child of Arthur and Ethel (Brownlow) Drown of Concord
and St. Johnsbury, Vt. She was predeceased on May 26, 1962,
by her husband, Stanley F. White, a Montpelier, Vt.,
builder/contractor and musician, whom she married on May 6,
1951. She was also predeceased by six brothers, Kenneth, Merle,
Wendell, Wayne and Arthur. A brother, Donald, died in infancy.
Her brother Maurice, age 95, lives in St. Johnsbury. Eleanor was
born in Concord, Vt., on Nov. 17, 1917, and graduated from St.
Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1936. After graduation, she began
her career as a telephone operator and supervisor at the New
England Telephone Company, and worked there for over 15
years. Eleanor was a dedicated wife and mother and, following
the birth of her children, she remained home working closely with
her husband in his contracting business in Montpelier. Always a
strong proponent of higher education, coupled with her keen
desire to never stop learning, Eleanor returned to school in her
early 60s, and pursued an associates degree in library science
through the Community College of Vermont. She worked in
libraries in the St. Johnsbury area until moving to Massachusetts
in 1979. Eleanor was a member of The Eastern Star and the
Trinity Methodist Church in Montpelier, Vt. She particularly loved
community service, and held leadership roles in Girl Scouts, Cub
Scouts, League of Women Voters and the Montpelier Mother's
Club. With great foresight and generosity of spirit, Eleanor
donated her body to Tufts New England Medical Center for
medical science. Members of Eleanor's immediate family include
her son and daughter-in-law, Jack White and Cathie
Partridge-White of Nashua, N.H., and her daughter Sharon L.
White of Raynham, Mass.; three grandchildren, Nathan White of
San Francisco, Calif., Matthew White of Baltimore, Md., and
Nicholas White of Shaker Heights, Ohio. She was extremely
proud of her children's and grandchildren's achievements. In
addition, she has many nieces, nephews and cousins whom she
truly loved and thought of dearly. Next spring, the family will hold
a memorial service in Concord, Vt., to celebrate her life.
Contributions can be made to the Jerry Drown Endowment Fund,
P.O. Box 906, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819. Checks should be made
payable to St. Johnsbury Academy in Memory of Eleanor White
('36). Burial will be at the family plot at Fairview Cemetery in East Calais, Vt.
