Doris (West) Badger , lifetime resident of St. Johnsbury, died May 19, 2008, at St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center at the age of 93. She was a longtime resident of the Hawkins House on Main Street. She was born June 6, 1914, the daughter of the late Frank and Alice (Mileham) West. Doris was a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy and Lyndon State Teacher's College. She taught in Glover and Orleans during her early teaching career and subsequently at the Portland Street School and for many years at the Arlington School. After 39 years, she retired in 1976 and worked as a substitute teacher. Doris enjoyed her summers spent at her camp on Harvey's Lake. She competed in the Senior Olympic Games held every year in Poultney. She also enjoyed traveling, bowling, walking, cross-country skiing, her own yard sales and others, and her many visits to Texas. Doris was a member of the AARP-Chapter 624 in St. Johnsbury, the Caledonia and Southern Essex Retired Teachers Association, the Grace United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of Mystic Star Chapter #29 Order of Eastern Star. She is survived by her sister, Alice "Ethel" Alley of Rutland, niece Bonnie Lee Jackson, husband James and great-nephew, Jason Jackson of Carrollton, Texas. Services will be held Friday, May 23, at 11 a.m., at the Grace United Methodist Church. Committal services will precede the service at 10 a.m. at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours.
