Bernard H. Willey , of Waterford, passed away at The Pines in Lyndon Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010 with family at his side. He was born in St. Johnsbury on June 13, 1920, one of six children born to Charles and Frances (Legendre) Willey. He graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1938. As a staunch Republican, Bernard followed a conservative agenda, whether politically, in business, or generally in his life. He was a member of the Caledonia County Republican committee. In Waterford he had served as a selectman, on the school board, the planning commission, the study committee for Zoning, the board of adjustors, and on the board of civil authority, where, as a Justice of the Peace, he routinely performed weddings, many of them at the Rabbit Hill Inn. Bernard established Willey Scales in 1941 in Plattsburg, N.Y., a business that he operated right up until the last few years. He was proud to have his son Bernard join him in the business in 1986, a business that is going strong! For years Bernard was the president of the Caledonia Fair Association and was proud of the fair's fiscal stability. He was a commercial pilot with both single and multi engine ratings. He was past president of the Burke Mt. Flying Club, the Vermont Agricultural Fairs Association, and the St. Johnsbury Riding Club. He is survived by his Lillian (Nutter) Willey; three daughters, Sandra McLure and husband Norman of Cambridge, Bonnie Gucwa and husband David of Brookline, N.H., Paula Gillander and husband Kevin of Waterford; son Bernard Willey II and wife Kim of Waterford; nine grandchildren, Marisa, Justin, and Morgan; Kali and Cory; Chad and Taran; Taylor and Kyle; three brothers, Carroll Willey of St. Johnsbury, Richard Willey of Barre, Gerald Willey of St. Johnsbury; sister Marguerite Willey of St. Johnsbury; Lillian's brother and two sisters, Herbert Nutter and wife Martha, Joyce Root and husband Robert, and Shirley Belmore all of Waterford; nieces, nephews and their extended families. He was predeceased by a sister Evelyn Leclerc. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m., at the Lower Waterford Congregational Church. The pastor, the Rev. Ann Hockridge, will officiate. Burial will be in the spring at Riverside Cemetery in Lower Waterford. Visiting hours will be held at the Sayles Funeral Home Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Bernard received fine and loving care while at the Pines. Memorial contributions could be made payable to "Resident Activity Fund," The Pines Rehab and Health Center, 601 Red Village Rd., Lyndonville, VT 05851. Or, recognizing his longtime love of Waterford, memorial contributions could be directed to Waterford Fire and Rescue, PO Box 90, Lower Waterford VT 05848.
