Barbara Babcock of East St. Johnsbury passed away Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, at the age of 94. She had resided at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab Center since 2008. Barbara was born in Rutland, Vt., on Nov. 2, 1916, the eldest of nine children born to Charles and Julia (Longmoore) Babcock. She was predeceased by six brothers and sisters: Robert Babcock, Priscilla Simpson, Vera Shastany, Clementine Brown, George Babcock and Charles Babcock. The Babcock family grew up in East St. Johnsbury. Barbara graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1934. She furthered her education at Parry Normal School and taught for a while. She decided to change careers and attended Fanny Farmer Cooking School. Barbara was a cook at Boston Lying-In, now part of Brigham and Women's Hospital, as well as other hospitals and nursing homes in the Boston area. She returned to East Village to live in 1969 and worked at St. Johnsbury onvalescent Center. She is survived by two sisters: Ruth Brown of St. Johnsbury, and Alice Steinmuller of Ocala, Fla.; and by nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Grove Cemetery.
