Albert George Chase (USN Ret.), 97, of Pensacola, went to be
with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Al was
born on July 20, 1917, in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. He was the
son of Ralph Hiram Chase and Helen Holt Fisher Chase.
Al attended St. Johnsbury Academy and joined the United
States Navy at the age of 17. He retired from the Navy as Chief
Boatswain's Mate. He served from 1941 - 1943 at Algiers Naval
Station in Louisiana, then served on the USS Hinsdale APA-120
to the Pacific Theater transporting troops. Action included going
in with the first wave at Iwo Jima. His unit delivered troops and
heavy equipment during the Battle at Okinawa. He also served
aboard the USS Coral Sea CVA 43, USS Nevada, USS Utah, USS
Franklin D. Roosevelt CVB-42, USS Wharton, and USS
Chaumont. He earned campaign ribbons for: American Area,
Asiatic-Pacific Area, World War II Victory, Occupation Medal-
Asia, China Service Medal, European-African Middle Eastern
Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Navy
Occupation Service Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal. After
serving 24 years in the Navy he worked for the Santa Rosa
Island Authority as a Pensacola Beach bridge tender for many
years. He was also a self-taught artist and enjoyed painting
landscapes as well as entertained family and friends with his cartoons.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister (Catherine
Chase) and brother (Ralph F. Chase) and niece, Patty Chase Pilette.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Joan Louiza
Chase, daughters: Joanne Martina Chase (husband, Curtis L.
(Carter, Jr.), granddaughter Amie H. Chase, and great grandson,
Caleb J.H. Chase of Hickory, NC; and Nancy Chase Hamilton
husband, Homer R. "Trey" Hamilton III) grandsons, Travis B.
Hamilton of Austin, TX and Logan C. Hamilton of Gainesville, FL.
He is also survived by two daughters from a previous marriage
union: Linda Chase DeGeus (husband, Leslie) and their four
children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grand children of
Santa Maria, CA, and Joanne Helen Chase Gibson, her two
children and two grandchildren of Cookeville, TN. He will also be
missed by his nephew, David Chase of East St. Johnsbury, VT
and his son, Ched Chase of Estero, FL.
