LAWRENCE: Reta E. , 93, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was a longtime resident of 214 Spring St., St. Johnsbury. She was born in St. Johnsbury, Aug. 13, 1909, the daughter of Frank A. and Elise (Beck) Lawrence. Miss Lawrence graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1927. Upon graduation she became a secretary with the UVM Extension Service, a position she thoroughly enjoyed for 52 years. In her words, "It's interesting work. It's always changing to meet the needs of the people." Reta was honored by both the University of Vermont and the State Agricultural College upon her retirement in 1979. She enjoyed crafts, gardening and getting together with family members for birthdays and other celebrations at Joe's Pond or at the Lawrence family farm. She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Doris Lawrence of St. Johnsbury, and Beaulah Lawrence of Danville; six nephews, Lawrence Kimball and wife Ann of St. Johnsbury, Charles Lawrence and wife Salee of Waterford, Alan Wilcox and wife Claire of Essex Junction, Albert Lawrence and wife Beatrice of Huntington, CT, Robert Lawrence of Hyattsville, MD, and Frank Lawrence and wife Ann of St. Johnsbury; and three nieces, Virginia Johnson and husband Ray of St. Johnsbury, Cynthia Scofield and husband Walter of Highgate Center, and Ellen Hankins and husband Jack of Bellevue, WA. Reta was predeceased by three brothers, Carl B. Lawrence, Horace A. Lawrence and twin brother Frank Ray Lawrence; and two sisters, Bernice Kimball and Margaret Wilcox. Graveside services for family and friends will be held at a later date at the Passumpsic Cemetery with the Rev. Jay Sprout officiating.
