PORTSMOUTH NEW HAMPSHIRE DIRECTORY
A cordwainer (or cordovan) is a shoemaker/cobbler who makes fine soft leather shoes and other luxury footwear articles.
A  bell hanger is a person who installs and repairs bells  and their attachments.
A "packet" in the 18th and 19th centuries was a boat contracted to carry mail (also passengers, but mail was the most important thing) regularly between two ports. Some made quite short trips (e.g. between England and France across the English Channel); others went halfway across the world, e.g. England to Australia or India. Packet boats were designed for speed, and were often armed, to protect the mail they carried form pirates, privateers and enemy navies. So a packet master was the captain of a packet.
A boatswain is an unlicensed member of the deck department of a merchant ship. The boatswain supervises the other unlicensed members of the ship's deck department, and typically is not a watchstander, except on vessels with small crews. Other duties vary depending on the type of ship, her crewing, and other factors.
A purser (also purser or pusser) is the person responsible for the handling of money and is responsible for all administration and supply.
A ship chandlery was a retail and wholesale source of supplies for both individual seamen and vessels.
A wharfinger is a person who is the keeper or owner of a wharf.
A Ware Dresser is a person who dresses and polishes ware and segregates ware into standard grades. Grinds down dressed spots and other defects, such as glaze droplets, kiln dirt, and color spots, using grinding wheel. Polishes dressed ware, using power buffer.
A whitesmith is a person who works with "white" or light-colored metals such as tin and pewter. While blacksmiths work mostly with hot metal, whitesmiths do the majority of their work on cold metal (although they might use a forge to shape their raw materials). The term is also applied to metalworkers who do only finishing work – such as filing or polishing – on iron and other "black" metals.
Whitesmiths make things such as tin or pewter cups, water pitchers, forks, spoons, and candle holders.
